ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is a global regulation requiring wood pallets and crates used in international shipping to be treated to eliminate insects, larvae, and other pests that could be present in raw wood.
Heat treatment (HT) involves heating the wood to a core temperature of 56°C (133°F) for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. This kills any organisms in the wood without chemicals — the preferred method in over 190 countries.
Every heat-treated pallet from Wrightway carries the official IPPC mark — the internationally recognized symbol of ISPM-15 compliance accepted by customs worldwide.

Who Needs Heat Treated Pallets?
Any business shipping goods internationally in wood packaging must use ISPM-15 certified pallets or crates in most countries.
Manufacturing facilities shipping product overseas — machinery, auto parts, electronics — need compliant pallets to avoid customs delays.
Agricultural producers and food processors exporting to regulated markets need heat-treated pallets for every shipment.
Some major U.S. retailers require ISPM-15 pallets even for domestic shipments as part of supplier compliance programs.
3PLs handling international cargo need certified pallets to keep customers’ shipments moving without incident.
CUSMA trade partners Canada and Mexico both require ISPM-15 compliance — not just overseas shipments.
Common Questions
No — heat treatment kills organisms in the wood but does not significantly affect the structural integrity or load capacity of the pallet.
Methyl bromide is a chemical fumigant now phased out or banned in most countries. Heat treatment (HT) is the accepted modern standard — no chemicals, safe for food contact, and preferred by customs authorities worldwide.
If you are shipping any goods internationally in wood packaging, ISPM-15 certification is almost certainly required. Your freight forwarder or customs broker can confirm requirements for your trade lanes. When in doubt, use heat-treated pallets — the cost difference is small compared to the risk of a rejected shipment.
